Choosing A Chair Bed

There are many different designs of chair bed in the shops and they all have pros and cons – so how do you find the right one for you?

Firstly, you need to decide who is most likely to be sleeping on the bed. If it is an adult then you need to choose a chair bed which has a suitable support system. The best for adults are the chair beds which have a fold out frame and a proper mattress support. You can find ones where the mattress is independent and lies on a taut mesh which is held to a metal frame with springs. These are great for the weight of adults and offer a really comfortable nights sleep. They are, however, at the top end of the price range.

If you are looking for a chair bed which will primarily be used by kids then you do not need quite the same thing. For kids you want to be able to throw a sleeping bag and pillow on it and be ready to go. For this reason I am a big fan of foam chair beds for kids

The foam chair beds do compact over time, but with the weight of kids, it takes quite a while – hence, it is not so much of an issue. These are easy to convert from chair to bed. For most of them the seat will usually just fold out flat onto the ground and become and instant bed. In fact, this is so easy that my 4 year old can do it!

Each of my boys have a foam chair bed in their room, and I keep a spare pillow and sleeping bag in the bottom of their wardrobes. This gives them a bit of independence which seems to work well.

The other option for a chair bed is a futon chair bed. These are good, but they are slightly more hassle than the foam chair bed, and I am not yet convinced that for children that are many advantages for the extra price which you pay. They do however, offer a good and slightly cheaper alternative for adults.

Remember, if you are choosing a chair bed for kids be sure to get one with washable covers! My final word of advice for a chair bed for a kids room is to try and get ones which arms. The reason for this is that kids tend to read either sprawled out on their beds or curled up, and a chair in their room with arm rests seems to create a snug place for them to read magazines or literature for school; somehow, it just seems to work better.

Why the Chair Bed is the Best Buy for your Kids

The chair bed is an essential item of furniture for many families. Before I had kids I thought that the most important thing for any guests staying overnight was comfort; but with kids it is different. Don’t get me wrong – they need to be comfortable as well, but since they tend to weight less than an adult their needs are different.

When my kids have friends around to stay they really don’t want me in the room – I think that is probably true for most children. They also don’t want to be separated at night, they always want their friends to sleep in their room.

If this is how it works in your family, then you have two options. The first is a trundle bed. These are great, but they can also be expensive and if you get one of the cheaper ones the mechanisms are not so good and you end up with fingers getting squashed.

The second, and in my opinion better option, is a chair bed. There several reasons why I am a fan of these. Firstly, they are really easy to pull out and fold away. This means that the kids can do it themselves – so I don’t need to bother them!

The other reason I like them is because when they don’t have friends to stay they use it to read and revise for school; in fact, they probably do more learning here than at their desk. I think that the reason my boys read so fast is because they have spent hours pouring over comics and magazines sitting in their chairs. To them, it is their space, and they can go and chill there. It also gets them away from the computers on their desks and the television downstairs – and I am a big believer that kids need time away from screen and the constant bombardment of stimulus that this generation seems to be under.

So, in conclusion, the chair bed may not be the perfect solution for your adult guests, but for an item of furniture in your kids room and a sleeping option for their friends the chair bed is bang on the mark!
